Peace, be Still
Scripture
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”” Mark 4:39-41 ESV
Prayer
Oh powerful and mighty Lord, with one word You calm the churning seas. With that same word, You can calm our anxious hearts.
Father, why do we strive so hard for peace when Your Word—Your very presence—is the answer to our unrest? Our hearts are prone to wander. We need You. We need true humility and genuine repentance. Give us a godly sorrow that leads to lasting change.
We are helpless without You, Lord. Teach us to fear You rightly—to stand in awe of Your power and Your authority above all else; but to not fear to approach You with the genuine cries of our hearts.
It is a daily battle to keep our eyes fixed on You instead of the circumstances around us. Strengthen us for that battle. Make us steadfast. Give us the resolve to pursue what is true and good and pure and noble.
Remind us that You have already won the victory. Even in the midst of the darkness we see, help us to remember—it will not last. You have the final say. We need Your encouragement and Your strength today, Lord. Help us to stand firm.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Questions for Reflection
Where am I trying to create my own peace instead of resting in His?
How can I intentionally fix my eyes on Jesus today, rather than on what’s happening around me?
